My Buddy the Gun Enthusiast got a chance to shoot one of those little 2 shot derringers, chambered in .357.
His advice for the first time you shoot it? Wear a motorcycle helmet.
He had never held a handgun that wanted to fly out of his hand. It didn't, but not for lack of trying.
Trollop is rethinking her enamoration of this until she's actually shot a borrowed one or two. Her interest is how the subject came up.
And, serendipity, Brigid had a post about them the other day too.

If you just absolutely have to have a derringer (a weapon which has been thoroughly obsoleted by the pocket auto and small-frame revolver,) make sure you buy a Bond Arms or American Derringer. Do not waste your time or money on the pot-metal crap from Davis or Cobra.
ReplyDelete(FWIW, every time I have ever checked into a "The gun fell out of his pocket and went off when it hit the ground" story, it was a cheap derringer.)
I've got one of those crappy pot-metal Derringers. Tam speaks the truth.
ReplyDeletePersonally, between the P3AT/LCP and the Airweight S&W/LCRs out there, I fail to see what purpose the 2-shot Derringer serves these days.
Unless, of course "It's cool" was your reason for buying it. That's totally acceptable...
Trollop was most interested. I think they are cool, but they don't rate too high on my Want Gauge.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jeff Coopers quote on derringers was "Derringers do nothing well, shun them".
ReplyDeleteGood post.
