Computer Bleg

My old computer blew up.  The recent power outages were just too much for it.  That's ok, as it was only doing duty as an email machine.  That can be transferred to the new primary maching with little effort

The old one DID have an ancient copy of Photoshop on board.  It was what I used to crop and condense pictures for this blog.  Now I am sans image editting software and I'm wondering if there are decent alternates to Photoshop.  I did very little layering and cloning before,  I just really need something that converts 3000x5000 550 MB jpgs to decently sized and cropped 700x500 100 KB gifs.

    Try Photoscape - it is freeware

    Photoscape is good for reducing pic sizes.

    Another alternative is Picnik, which is web-based, and is owned by Google. I use it all the time, it is easy to use, and you don't even have to register to use it:

    One advantage that it has is that, being web-based, you can use it from any computer.

    Honestly, you can use the basic Microsoft Office Picture Manager to resize images.

    And Paint will let you convert PNG JPEG TIFF and GIF images from one file type to another.

    Don't pay for something that you already have for free.

    It's free, and it's about as good as Photoshop.

    I've tried Gimp and it did a lousy job on compression. I might as well have left the images alone and HUGE.

    I like Irfanview for most picture stuff, it does most simple editing as well as converting any format to any other pic format. It will also do auto bulk conversion/compression if you have a bunch of pics to do.

    paint.net is pretty nice, for a light weight photo editor. But for a complete Photoshop replacment it would have to be Gimp.

    Buy a cheap printer that comes with a copy of Elements. Sell the printer on Ebay.

    Another open source choice: Paint.Net - I find it a little simpler to use than Gimp.
