Even Hearst and 'yellow journalism' was predated by east coast publishers. Why, some reports of Lincoln's assassination described the actual shooting as an accident. The reader, you understand, was to take sympathy upon the perps as they fled the scene. Wouldn't you also, dear reader, flee when it was reported that you are a suspect? That J.W. Booth actually did the deed was pushed far down in the articles, even then portrayed as akin to a negligent discharge.
Certainly some of these propelled the lust of false narrative forward but they were not the originators.
