Those things take shit images.
Like a screen of a 1955 Black and White TV. The surgeon, before he can cut on you, needs the equivalent advance to 1080P. Minimum. Don't waste time on Open MRI if you can help it.
Even to a layman like me those images are shite.
On a straight comparison basis a traditional full bore MRI will provide better images than an open MRI of comparable field strength......all other things being equal. The problem is that few MRI machines are "equal" they vary in age, in the field strength of the magnet, in the software used to produce images, in the RF coils that read signal from the body etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteAnd the technologist operating the machine may be the single biggest factor in getting quality images. Many MRI Techs are simply button pushers who do not understand the physics behind image production and don't understand how to alter machine settings to produce the best possible image. And sadly many radiologists don't call the techs on that fact and are happey to read ANY image as long as they get to generate a bill. But yes....if you have the choice AND you can tolerate the closer confines of a traditional bore MRI machine that is the type of machine you should have your exam done in.
