It's based on belief systems. In America, everyone is all about "Science" and so we see UFOs. In Britain, it's ghosts. In latin countries it's Our Lady.
Well, then, explain the preponderance in Australia, Britian, the bilingual Low Countries, India, South Africa, New Zealand Hong Kong, and former US colonies with lots of English speakers, still, like the Philippines and Japan.
