Well shoulda saved the Gin post for today

Ah, well.

Apparently it's masks back on at work Monday.  We are at numbers lower than when mask came OFF, and any upward trend may be whole contributable to importing illegal aliens, but...  Whatever

But I won't be there anyhoo, Cancer doc in Georgetown will take up the whole damn day.  And that's a doc office, so it was planned for masks no matter what.

Squall send a tree limb down on my car.  Thought I escaped damage but... it hit the pillar and cracked the windshield, so I got THIS to deal with.  Safelight prolly, that dent doesn't look too bad.  But that kind of dent can total a car if it is too big.  Drat.

How was YOUR week?

Gin

The botanicals are very strong in Plymouth gin, and are more floral and piney.

The botanicals are strong in Aviation gin and are more spicy and a bit more subtle.

I like both.  But if I had to choose, I'd go with the Aviation.

----

Had my first Old Fashioned and properly made French 75 last week.  Just to keep up on the cocktail bucket list.

I was told that the French 75 was half brandy, half champagne.  It's better than that.  Gin, champagne, lemon. And it didn't give me an artillery quality hangover because I had just one.

All gun control is racist

But you know, if you go after firearm felons by increasing apprehensions and prosecution...

And I'm not talking mere possession (that wraps up a lotta folks that carry for the right reason, people interest in self defense) just give them a ticket or a warning.  I'm not talking locking felons in possession (figure out a way to make that a mere misdemeanor somehow, a big time convicted shoplifter with a piece is not really a big danger).  I'm talking only coming down hard on convicted violent felons, or committers or violent felonies, also in possession.  And throwing the federal book at them guys.  Lenient on all others.  Modified Project Exile.  If you jump on EVERY gun possessor you violate a lot of otherwise innocent people.  And those violations are problematic.  And, hell, could even be me.

Even if you just did that, just really went after the actual real bad guys... that system would still appear to be super racist.  The net bags a disproportionate amount of black men.  For one thing that effort is gonna concentrate on urban areas.  Baltimore, Chicago, Oakland, St Louis.  Where violent white felons do not concentrate (as if they concentrate anywhere)  So. There are bad optics, there, at a minimum.

I don't know how to solve this and make everyone happy.  Or at least the innocent and undeserving unviolated. I guess I am not a good Solutionary.  Sorry, Maj, I'll keep trying.

This is bad gris gris

You hate to see it.

Remington Offers $33m to Families of Sandy Hook Shooting Victims

I know the perfectly cromulent justifications of Remington, but it is in NO WAY Remington's fault.

Flation

What is causing the supply bottlenecks?  It's not disincetivified labor with over generous Universal Basic Income stay-home benefits is it?  Tell me Mr. Powell, is it that or are you fibbing about the temporarinessitude and it is really The Fundamentals?

Also...

It could just a few mutations away from turning us all into light sensitive psychotic albinos that want to get to Charlton Heston

So your argument is you are stupid

Not leftist?

Black Rifle Coffee Company talked to the New York Times and have been doing damage control ever since.

Buncha years back a buddy of mine that was a 3D printer enthusiast, and gun enthusiast, printed up one of them Liberator .22s for fun and the Washington Post heard about him and wanted to interview him and take his picture and video of him shooting it.

I told him that was a bad idea.  I told him over and over.  They will make him look like a crazed chump. I told him to record the whole interview himself.  He did do this last bit.  The article wasn't too bad.  Much better than BRCC's interview.  But the risk was too great.  I knew that and told him.  He sorta knew that and did it anyway.  He's a bright guy and all, but has his blind spots.  It was dumb to do.  It coulda hurt the 2A movement.  It coulda got him fired "Do you know you have a domestic terrist working there? [link to WaPo article]" Just a bad idea, IMHO.

I guess BRCC thought "what's the worst that can happen?"  Well, you may well go out of business now, is what.  LOTS of places sell coffee beans and the NYTimes doesn't use those other, better, beaneries to piss off and on conservatives.

"Black Rifle Coffee Company.  We SWEAR we aren't actually #NeverTrump commies, we are just dumb as stumps.  I have no idea why the DoD let someone as moronical as me fly their aircraft.  Please keep buying out stuff!  If I lose this job I am probably not bright enough to get another one and my family will starve."

Good luck, BRCC

You know what this means?

It means the investigation was starting to look like someone on Biden's side of the aisle was looking culpable.  And that is inconvenient to the narrative.  No big deal tho.  It was oldsters.  Not like they are real people.  Some of them were probably combat veterans of WWII.  Survive all that only to be killed by Governor Party-Tetes.

You know, without any publicity for the event, Obama could fill a bigger room at a moments notice, today, years out of power and off TV.  Even during a Covid lockdown.  With paying donors.

Bama

No why is Alabama at the bottom of the WuFlu vax compliance from a shot promoted by the CDC?  The usual suspect blame all them MAGA hate wearing folks that live in Alabama.  Going against Operartion Warp Speed because a Biden is now at the helm.   Can't just be them.

Hmmm.

What could it be...?

Hey isn't there a town called Tuskegee in Alabama.  There was an institute there that gave black men free medical attention for YEARS starting in the 30s.  All the participants were told they had 'bad blood'.  Thing is the cure for that so called bad blood was widely available after '47.  When word got out they were studying these subjects to essentially watch the syphilis kill them, well, you can understand the community's hesitancy to trust 'free' medical care especially with the CDC involved.  Their credibility is still not up there even today.  Perhaps justifiably so.

Hell, they only stopped this monstrous experiment in 72!  Even I remember shit in 1972.  I remember moving from Wheaton to Shady Grove the day after my birthday.  I got to sit in the front seat of the station wagon because the back was full of stuff.  My mom and Mrs. Dant were with me.  We stopped at a grocery store on the way.  It has snowed so I was wearing my red rubber snow boots.  Mom prolly got them on my feet by putting plastic bread bags over my shoes.

So, living memory.  CDC, not always a force for good.

This is astounding

Remember when there was variety shows?  Donny and Marie, Hee Haw, Sonny and Cher, Captain and Tennille, the Brady Bunch Hour, the Muppet Show?  Some acts were ok, some were pretty good.

But nothing like the incandescent talent displayed here for the Lady on the Two Cent Stamp pre WWII.  They pack a lot into this:

Not just the singers, remember the big band behind them of Johnny Mercer's.  And these are B celebrities.  Well, not quite A.  Not headliners.

And I don't think I saw a USO clip that didn't have Jerry Colonna in it.

Refreshing

Not everyone in Gentrified-DC-Stay-On-THAT-Side-Of-The-River is defund ACAB insane.  He's prolly not good of folks defending them ownselves, but at least he isn't saying the solution to all of DC's problem is somehow... gun control?

The dividing line in DC used to be Rock Creek Park.  The 'dirty poors' used to be East of the Park, and if they knew what was good for them they'd stay there.  Well, the liberals in DC have chased out poor whites and there are only poor blacks living in DC.  And the Progs want them to stay on their side of the Anacostia.  So there is a racial element when Lefties get up in arms about crime in 'their' section.  The police chief is telling them that Lefty policies aren't going to solve it for them.

Oh, and West of the Park used to be a black neighborhood back before it built up.  Black farms inside the city limits.  Cheap housing lacking plumbing and sewage like downtown had.  More than a century ago.  They were chased out starting before WWI.

See?

First the mayor of New York

Now Ol' Puddinhead.

The gun banners feel comfortable talking about banning hundguns again.  It's 1974 again, when Dr. Mark Borinsky founded the National Council to Control Handguns.

Of course the proportions of revolvers back then was higher.  They are specifically concerned with 'just' semi-auto pistols these days.  They say.  You know, the most in-common-use flavor out there.  So lots of voters own one.  Lots of those voters don't want the gov't to take it.  Lots of those voters are Democrats.

How do they square the circle, here?  If you can't do it during the Ford/Carter years when there wasn't decades of "Hell no, they aren't gonna take THIS right away" purchases made...

Fireworks

Neighbors are still lighting off fireworks.  They are half polite in that they always stop by 10 PM except for one time.  I appreciate that.

Could be worse.  There are folks with them 37mm (the .mil uses .40, so they don't interchange) 'grenade' launchers.  They are sold as flare launcher.  Well, they are rolling their own fireworks and popping them off out of these.

I am sure their existence gives the ATF the vapors.

And if they roll their fireworks a little too hot, well that actually is a grenade launcher and big felony trouble is coming down.

But, worse, I am wondering what a big Kaboom looks like when you mess up your charge.  Can't be pretty.

Was tempted to buy some ammo...

But why?

Sure, my brand is available again, And the prices are more reasonable.  Not ideal, but no longer prohibitive.

But my burn rate is still WAY down.  Anemia makes for a crappy range day, so they are few.  I can wait still longer.

Next follow-up is 3 AUG.  Two weeks.  This guy's front office is not impressing me.

A good front desk is a sign of a good doc.  Generally speaking.  I'm not saying quit a doc because of a crappy receptionist.  But definitely take that into account.  Conversely, let an outstanding front desk help improve your confidence in the whole operation.

Upside?  Ima need to cut another hole is this belt.  Been losing a goodly amount of weight.

It used to be middle aged suburban dad-bods

It used to be middle ages suburban dad-bod types that carried concealed in a fanny pack.  Goofy and uncool.  Might as well wear sandals and black socks.  Or inline skates.

Well, it's come full circle and criminals are using the fanny packs now.  Is gangster rap culture cool, or has it become as uncool as fat old guys?

Just awful.  Awful for fashion reasons, and awful, in this case, for heinous daylight street execution.

Made a mistake

I image-searched my cancer.  Ugh.  Lots of disfiguring red facial blotches, and swelling.  From the over thickening blood you see.  Because I am making too much of a macro protein, savvy?

Do not recommend.

There is no cure for Waldenstroms.  And I only know I have it because I already have symptoms.  So...  maybe we can alleviate them symptoms every now and then, but they will always come back.  Hooray.  And get worse.  Hooray.  Over a long long time, as it is a slooooooooow burn.   Then it will kill me.  But hey, if a man lives long enough his prostate will kill him.  I won't live that long to have to worry about that.  And, I can still buy green bananas now, sure.  So I got that going for me.

That all made me think of this safety sign for high voltage.  This one usually refers to how much it will hurt as you die after getting ZAPPED.  Mine will just hurt for years and years and years...  Good thing my Morale and Laundry Officer is working overtime!

"IMBRUVICA can be used in combination with Rituximab!"  Yeah, yeah.  I know.   Soon.  Soon.

I'd be tempted to take the staycation, too

I never got the months off from work everyone else did during lockdown.

Maybe Boris just wants a week off.

Eat Healthy 2

Buried Lede

Sure it's embarrassing to think you are being stalked by a drone, but to be mistaken about that.

But getting stalked by the largest known planet in the solar system is WAY worse.  That thing is big enough to influence the tides if it got that close.  We did have a HUGE thunderstorm here yesterday evening.  I wonder if Jupiter in Scotland caused that?

Disco

Was Disco more influential than Punk?

I think they were about the same, looking back from this peak.

When KISS Dynasty came out in 79 they talk in the press (16 magazine) that one of the tracks had Disco appeal.  Disco was already dead.  Most thought KISS was at this time, too.  That was the opinion of the other 10, 11, and 12 year olds in my neighborhood, at least.

I still have a full set of KISS cards somewhere...

Eat Healthy!

I've been a picky eater all my life.  Been exhorted that I need to eat healthier or it will take ten years off my lifespan.

"So instead of living to 95, I'll make it to 85?  AWESOME!"

With the cansker there is a lot less motivation to forcing down celery and iceberg lettuce now.  In fact I worry a lot less about what I eat.  And have a lot less other material worries, too.

But if I could wave a magic wand and make five foods I don't like taste delicious to me?  They’d be:

  1. Onions
  2. Tomato slices
  3. Lettuce
  4. Pickles
  5. Peppers
Yup.  Sammich fixins, among others.  But also a good base.  It would convey to other foods.  Also, add Apples.

But now, it is bacon and pancakes and real maple syrup and pulp free calcium enriched OJ.

Odds and Sods

Bought some Navy Gin at the likker sto.  Forgot to get Absinthe.  Will go back.

Currently reading this.  It's good.  Like candy.  Moscow for a Count in the 20s and 30s.  I may have mentioned it?  I don't want to read it fast because I am trying to savor it.  A Gentleman in Moscow.

Doing Genealogy.  There was family lore that some direct relative was on the Mayflower.  None of the names in the 1600s on MY list match the passenger list.  Quite a few "Born in 15-sumthing in town in England, died in mid 16-sumthing in town in Massachusetts."  So, 4th boat over?  6th?  Dragged their feet enough to keep me out of the nicer Back-Bay social clubs.

Also, family lore said direct relatives were Civil War vets.  Nope  Maybe one.  Correct age range and his tombstone says, "Lieutenant T-Bolt" on it.  Another relative was a confirmed private in the Continental Army late 1770 to earl 1780s.  Couldn't get a promotion, huh?  Didn't want the responsibilities of Corporal?  Anyway.  Nice.

Other relatives are the correct age to serve in the Civil War, and lived in Upstate New York.  Dairy and cheese men.  Dunno how they got out of it.  Not wealthy, so hard to pay for a substitute.  A story that wasn't passed down.  Draft dodgers.

Commies ain't cool

Remember when we thought they were on the ash heap of history.  I guess they still had to ramp up some more megadeaths or something. Put on a comeback. Maybe Cuba will at least come over to the good side, soon.

Drat!

No post queued,  Doc appointment all day.  Just follow-up style.  I doubt any of them will move the ball in a positive direction.

Been seeing a lot of stuff about how the 2nd Amendment says nothing about granting individuals permission to own a firearm.  Mentally insane Keith Olbermann being chief among them.

I'd post a link but I am apparently blocked by Olbermann on Twitter.  Can't see his tweets.  Can only see em second hand.

This is the first time I have found I am blocked by anyone.  Olbermann!  Heh.  Awesome.

Other, less famous, say that only Scalia thought it an individual right, and everyone else consider it a group right.  Well, sue somebody.  Take that case to SCOTUS and get the group right nonsense ruled on.  Our side had to wait 75 years, so, good luck.

None of those things are contradictory

In a discussion about the editor of the autobiographical papers of the greatest British hero of the Victorian Age, they described the editor thusly:

MacDonald Fraser was a contradictory figure. A patriotic right-winger who had a deep respect for other cultures and peoples; one of Hollywood’s most in-demand screenwriters who happily lived on the Isle of Man in a self-conscious recreation of “the good old days”; a fully paid-up reactionary who wished to reintroduce corporal and capital punishment, but who loathed British incursions abroad.

But are those things at all contradictory?  At least on this side of the Atlantic.  There are conservative cases, here, both for and against capital punishment, say.  For and against incursions abroad.  You could always be a YUGE patriot and still respect other cultures and people.  If you can work for Hollywood, while also living half a world away, you are just very fortunate to not be standing calf deep in proverbial Cali filth.

Those points just seem all consistent, to me.

And now I want to dig out my Flashman novels.

I was wondering when they'd get back around to this

It's been 30 years since the gun ban orgs shifted focus to AR's and AK's from handguns.  Fewer people owned the rifles but nearly everyone had or knew someone with a handgun in a sock drawer.

The admitted truth is the most firearm homicides are done with handguns, but also, most self defense gun use is done with handguns.  A combination of numbers extant and convenience to the user, mostly.

But it's a tough sell, still, to go after handguns, now as well as thirty years ago.  Go after the scary 'assault weapon' rifles.

But that didn't work either.  It's long lost it's initial boogeyman momentum, and complaining about them only sells more of em.  So a few of the more honest gun ban types bring up that handguns are the true scourge.

I don't think that's going to help them, even with a full court press propaganda push behind it.  Handguns and awareness that DGUs actual exist serious number are even more plentiful now than 30 years ago.

The prohibitionists are going to have take more extreme measures.  Gunpowder causes Covid?  Hoppes cleaning fluid existing anywhere within a quarter mile of your location lowers testosterone in men and causes birth defects?  Semi-autos are fash, and bash the fash?  Yeah, I dunno.

Booze seasons

Like wearing white shoes, booze should be consumed in season.  Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, clear liquors are appropo.  In the colder months, the brownest of the brown liquors.  Bourbon.  Or Scotch if you are one of THOSE kind, ya filthy animal.

(Little secret?  Go ahead and drink what you want when you want.  Just pretend to civilized, outwardly.  Or not.  I like uncivilized filthy animals, too.  Yes, I knew plenty of Marines.)

There you go!  Items for a Bucket List.  Booze I wanna try but really haven't appreciated in my short life and before I get spirited away by Cancer and Vengeful God.

  • I haven't touched Tequila since a very traumatic even at age 17.   Maybe get some good stuff of that.  Try it again.  Not a WHOLE bottle just yet, I am still traumatized 35 years later.
  • Madiera
  • Proper Absinthe
  • Napoleon Brandy
  • A well made Olde Fashioned.
  • Gin Fizz
  • Lime Rickey
  • Pimm's Cup
  • Claret
  • I got good gin and quite a few good bourbons accounted for.... never hurts to expand this list, cocktail wise of otherwise.
  • ... what else?

I got a FEVAH

And the only cure is more lime and gin.

Speaking of booze...

We are FULL on into Gin&Tonic season. And I remember Tam tipped me off, on her blog, to Fever Tree Tonic Water.  "How much better can it be?" sez I, "What the hell, I'll try it, I guess."

Oh my.  Thas purty good.  Nice balance.  Good straight, great with Plymouth gin (RN).

Dammit.  I'm stuck with getting the good stuff now, aren't I?  Dammit Tam...  Well there are worse things to spend a few extra bucks on.  Thanx.

Homer

I was gonna post about Homer Price and the Doughnut Machine, I already did last year.

Did Caffeine Create the Enlightment

Well, that and tobacco, and don't forget better/cheaper booze.  All three have some positive effect on the thought process.  All three together is the important bit.

A smoker will tell you how a cigarette can clear and focus the mind.  I can attest to this.  Yes, there are plenty of thing wrong with smoking, and I am glad I stopped, but wasn't devoid of positives.  Booze and creativity?  There are theories.

All three came together as one at about the time of the Renaissance and the Enlightment.

Those thee are much better than late night dorm room reefer schemes:

But wait... what new product widely appeared at the end of the Enlightenment?  Easy.  The widespread consumption of the potato and tomato.  Your French Fries and ketchup make you ordinary again.  But maybe more moral.  Makes you want to fight kill and die to end the scourge of slavery, them Krinkle Kuts with a side of Del Monte catsup, eh?

30 some types of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma

Thirty!  I go through the list and point and go, "Glad I don't have that one." It's Baskin Robbins cancer.

Mine, named for the Swedish discoverer Jan Gosta Waldenström, is kinda rare.  And, interestingly enough, my sub-flavor of it is rarer, and enough to attract the attention of bigger hematologists.  So I get a 'top of the line' second opinion.

[I'm gonna omit that umlaut 'ö' from now on and just use regular 'o']

I wonder if it is prevalent in Swedes, since I am a full quarter Swedish on my mother's side, and my Swedish grandmother was my age when she died of some form of lymphoma.

Anyway, got an appointment with a downtown doc arranged.

The deal with Waldenstrom Macroglobulimea, aka Lympho Plasmacytic Lymphoma (not leukemia) aka LPL, is you watch it and do treatment only when body produces too many of them Macro Globules or the symptoms get too bad.

But what level is bad?

  • I got neuropathy in my extremities that is very annoying.
  • My back pain might be related to the LPL.
  • My listlessness almost certainly is.  Anemia.
What I don't have, yet, is:

  • Immunoglobulin M, aka IgM, protein count levels north of 5000.  I have half that.  You have a 50th of that.  But 5000ish often triggers treatment.  That's the Macro Globule, btw; IgM is.
  • High viscosity in my blood causing vision issues
  • Viscosity in my blood causing an elevated stroke risk
  • Diarrhea
  • Night sweats
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swollen spleen or liver
Glad I don't have some of them

The treatments are two main types.  Kill the cancer cells with chemo, and thus cease production of big protein globs.  Let the good blood catch up.  The other type is to take out my blood, filter the blood plasma to get the big globs out, then put it back.

I am having a bit of trouble tolerating the symptoms I do have.  You have heard me whinge before.  I am concerned my current pain affects my judgement.  That this is nothing compared to what is coming.  That I should wait and endure longer, and then get more out of the treatment.  That there is only so many treatments they can do that will help before they are more harm than good.  So, that is on my mind ahead of Second Opinion Mega Doctor.

Insurrectionists

Remember how they put up fences and made the national guard sleep on cold concrete then put up higher fences and STILL keep the Capitol closed because the January 6 rowdies that happened to have ALL forgotten their guns that first time outburst to topple the Democracy, somehow, were supposed to be coming back any second now?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Nancy?  Lame.  I don't think they are coming back.  I've thought that since the 7th.  Of January.

I think the only MAGA types that had guns on the 6th of January were all on the fed payroll and all were in hotels on the Virginia side of the river during the brouhaha. Prolly the smartest move for them, individually.  Guard the pitiful baggage train.

I wasn't gonna send in my NRA ballot

Because to hell with Wayne LaPierre (he's got to go).  But John convinced me otherwise.  You got to August 15th to vote, sign it, stamp it and hope the mail gets it there before then.  Plan ahead.

Like youse, I am disappointed in the NRA, president and board.  Grifters.  Cancer.  But the organization can be better, needs to be better, and I hope it can get better. Also, I want the NRA to do better because they pay money to friends of mine who do actual good work for them.  JayG and Tam

SERE Training

You see they should've shifted gears to evasion.  Instead these sovereign citizen types allowed themselves to be pinned in place, hampering their freedom of movement.

The first E is for Evasion.  Now that they are caught they gotta worry about R Reistance and E Escape.  S Survival wasn't really in play just yet.

These particular individuals may not have had the advantages of Government Instruction, which is pretty cursory to begin with anyway.  But their real first mistake is attracting attention to themselves in the first place.  11 people looking like they are going to a church picnic but have a buncha rifle and pistols hidden out of sight?  Cops rarely notice them.  11 people in Massachusetts walking around with load bearing gear and rifles and pistols... Even the slower police officers tend to notice that.

Lesson learned?  If you are up to shennanigans maybe don't look like you are up to shennanigans.  Hard to put the stopper back once things get all kinetic.

Sneaking off on foot into the woods might have been a thought.  Sneaking off into the woods with a contact on the other side that might have driven you off somewhere else and all this planned ahead of time might have been a better thought.

"They had car trouble T-Bolt!  How can you plan ahead for that?"

Two teams on parallel tracks.  In contact with one another.   Both with excess passenger capacity and both with folks with sharp overland orienteering skills?  That kind of plan?

No matter.  Escape and Resist now.  Your buddy is a Fed, tho.

Friendship

Happy Independence Day

Go blow up symbolioc tyrants that can't even run their own lives. I'll be damn if they run mine, sunshine.

Barracuda!

TeeVee

I'd have paid Comcast more money the past 5 years if they'd have done what I said and let me have Turner Classic Movies, and ONLY TCM, as an ala carte option.  So I cut the TV cord way back then.

To replace that, I instead spend money on BluRay players and DVDs and have amassed what is essentially a sans-Osgood channel.

Dumber than a box of hammers, and now they are eclipsed like Blockbuster.  Fools.

Lots of John Wayne.  Bogie.  Myrna Loy.  Hitchcock.  Plus Prime can fill in other gaps, catch as catch can.

Thursday, July 1, 2021

Oh dear...

Because I can take a pile of metal parts that don't fit together, apply file and stone and even dremel to said parts, end up with part that DO then fit together and make a darn reliable military grade firearm...  All in the comfort of my living room.

And there a plenty of you that can get a pile of parts mailed to you, acquire a single other part elsewhere, then with a video or $14 picture book instruction put those parts together because they are supposed to all fit together as they come from the warehouse... And then end up with a perfectly functioning AR.

Are you a potential terrist?  If you just read the picture book and internalized the lessons are you a terrist?

If you can detail strip a firearm and put it back together, is that enough gunsmith skill to make you a terrist?

So many questions.

Since 1934, was the ATF ever more than a dangerous joke?
