I don't have an AR. Maybe someday. But it'd be a hassle. I'd have to stock a whole new type of ammo and whatnot. Plus I never have gotten over the whole use of a semi-auto .223 when I have .308 just lying around.
I'll get over the reluctance someday.
Hmmm.
You know I keep coming back to the old impractical pistol carbine. You see where I'm going with this?
What about my FIRST AR being a .45 carbine? I have .45ACP stocked. Intriguing... While I'm at it, put a suppressor on there. Ooo, now we're getting fun.
Yeah yeah, pistol caliber carbines aren't 'in' right now. But it's not like this is the goto gun for social purposes. It's a fun gun. A souped up Marlin Camp Carbine. With a suppressor on the subsonic round it would fill a niche, yes. It would scratch that carbine itch I've had for ages, and permanently. I'd spend as much on making a custom lefty bolt .45 with a suppressor as I would for a AR setup, and with the AR I can still have access to a boat load of accessories (not as much as a .223 variety, but still jillions.)
Points against it... Man, but that's unconventional behavior for me.

Hardly a landslide, that. He stll won, but if that's a mandate, I'm Cindy

I have an AR in .223 and I love it, BUT it's not everyone's bag. Some prefer the AK and won't get an AR. If it doesn't do it for you don't let the cacophony of people push you into thinking it's something you need. You obviously have the rifle sector of your collection covered. Pistol caliber carbines are such a blast. A friend of mine loves them and I think they can be practical for a lot of uses and no one can say they aren't fun. Do what works for you and know the limitations of ALL of your firearms. No diehard 5.56 carbine user would say it has all the bases covered, either.
Well, pistol caliber carbines make sense for me. Where I live it involves travel to go to a decent rifle range. The nearest and most convenient ranges to go to are of two flavors. Flavor #1: Short range indoor. Flavor #2: Outside and limited to pistol caliber weapons or shotguns.
Not everyone is in the same fix I'm in so I can see how they would prefer a "real" rifle.
Food for thought time. If there was a Level 4 outbreak, and we weren't turned into Shamblors, what would be the most common Ammo Supply available to us? Due to the U.S. Military now using 9mm, .223, .308, and 12 Gauge, as much as I hate to admit it, I think some sort of .223 needs to be in one's Arsenal. Add in the Police with their .40 S+W, plus the ubiquitous .22LR, all other Ammo Calibers are probably now relegated to use in "Fun Guns". Yes, the AK is a great End of the World Gun, but one better have a Large Stockpile of Ammo BEFORE the Shit Hits the Fan. Same for all the other weapons , like .357 Snubbies from Hell, CMP Garands, and .380 Bersas.
I don't like it at all, but what good is an Empty Gun when you're trying to escape from a Mob of Zeds?
No, my personal Arsenal doesn't cover all those Necessary Calibers, but when the money allows it, that's what I plan on buying and stockpiling.
YMMV, of course.
I have been looking for a good/serviceable .45 ACP carbine myself. Eyes are sketchy over 100m iron sights plus I'm in urban territory. So .45 works....
WRT your quandary? see below.
In the next 6 months I intend to get one - but (as is the prevailing wisdom according to Wolfman Jack)"It all depends on your boogaloo situation, ya unnerstand....."
But that's just me....
I have the Beretta Cx4 in .40 and it also comes in a .45acp.
It also is in a lefty.
I may have to buy one, too.

Oh, and the Cx4 can be had for $800 street.
You know that "I just want one" is a perfectly valid reason for buying a gun, right?
If you're going to do this, do it right. You're going big and slow, .45 ACP, so the suppressor is imperative. Might as well right? And my understanding is that the .45 ACP maxes out at a barrel length under 10 inches, anything more is a waste, so there's never a good reason to have a 16" barrel on a .45 carbine, aside from iron sight radius I suppose. So don't get the BAZ45 with the 16" barrel. Get the short (11.5"?) barrel with the can. And we want pictures, and a video on Youtube.
Intresting perspective on not owning an AR platform in .223 but I will point out that properly set up it has much utility. One very viable option for you to consider is a S&W 15/22, it is inexpensive to shoot and will help instil the proper manual of arms for the AR. Mine is the 15/22 MOE model.
AR-10? In .308?
Oleg Volk is going to keep posting photos of that 45AR until I have to buy one!
