New shooters have asked me "What gun should I buy?"
My response up to now has been "What do you want it for?" They usually mean a pistol for self defense, then I say "Try a lot of guns. I can help you with a sample of different types. Pick a gun that shoots well for you and fits your fist and budget and what not."
I'm not going to do that anymore. Now I'm going to say "First get an AR, then a pistol that takes a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds. Spend lots of money on these two. Guns politicians want to confiscate from you. Then we'll talk about your third purchase..."
Need more stakeholders.

Can't agree with this, T-Bolt. You're not going to force potential gun owners to become patriots by requiring them to buy a gun subject to ban/confiscation. They'll just turn it in, then turn their neighbor in. The patriotism comes first, and if they don't have that already as an adult, it's unlikely that they'll suddenly develop it when the crunch comes.
Who said 'require'? And even patriots dislike losing valuables to the gov't.
Considering they will ask me which pistol to buy, decide on it, get it, then forget about the issue because 'they got theirs' and ignore the gun grabbers forever after, might as well at least get them to THINK they have skin in the game.
Actually, you should tell them that they need to make sure that they get a "Shoulder Thing that goes up" on their Rifle.
I got one of those on my M1A's stock, Les!
First get an AR,
GREAT entry level long arm - moderate price to buy and feed, if you find it needs tweeking to meet your taste (as you find your tastes) you have more ad-ons than legos has blocks to make it fit your needs.
If it still does not meet yours needs, you have very specialized needs and need to spend some special money for something special...
Handgun - get a plain vanilla 15 round 9mm. If it doesn't suite you, upgrade / get something specialized.
FACT IS - they are going after the entry level jack-of-all-trades stuff.
Can't find "Like" button...
The AR is a fine firearm, indeed. Lots of options, so the new shooter can modify it to taste in a number of ways. You won't be doing them a disservice by advocating an AR...and by all means, if they are ever considering getting one, get it before it gets banned.
