Listen for leaks. They always telegraph their intentions and plan months or weeks in advance. And always leak something.
If someone says they are planning to kill, believe them.

Isn't this the "Mein Kampf" lesson? I recall reading things written just after WW2 that said Hitler wrote everything he planned to do in that book, and the warning was that when psychotic megalomaniacs write down what they plan to do, believe them.
Not to violate Godwin's law, you see, but it does seem to be an appropriate reference.
