I always like this quote of his, too.
" Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe."
Sounds a little bit like me, too, trying to make the actual job as efficient and quick as possible. Just like I explained before.
"That Lincoln was a horrible tyrant and destroyed the constitution, T-Bolt!"
"Hmmm. I see. What part of Georgia are you from?"
"Why, I'm from Maco.. HEY!..."

Well, he was, and I'm from Central Georgia, and would say that even if I was from Ohio.
I think Lincoln got it wrong. Would any of the colonies joined the union after the revolution if they had been told that they could not ever leave? Are we bound forever because people hundreds of years ago agreed to something? What if the union does become something a state or group of states decide is no linger in the best interest of the people?
I grew up in Maine, and I'm not a fan of Mr. Lincoln.

Sure, why not?
Not sure about that. Reading the debates between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists is pretty instructive. There were a lot of people who didn't like a Bill Of Rights because they thought that the States (and the People) held the rights, and stating the amendments would lead to creeping growth of Federal encroachment on those rights.
Looking back on it, they were right.
Making an explicit "No backsides" would almost certainly nixed the whole deal.
As far as the "would they join if they could never leave" thing, The 13 all joined under something called "Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union". Yes, it is usually shortened to just the Articles of Confederation but that second part kind of means something.,
