Collective Right

'You can tell it's about a militia, like the National Guard. The second amendment is not a right for an INDIVIDUAL right.'

You still see statements like that in comments trolls on verious political commentaries.

Those people need to be reminded that the Supreme Court ruled that, HELLZ yeah!, it's an indivudual right. All 9 justices agreed that it was an individual right, even the 4 that thought DC hadn't violated that individual right.

Oh, it's definitely an individual right. Now, I consider myself to be pretty liberal in most things, but the knee-jerk reaction to the 2nd Ammendment always infuriants the living shit out of me.

I, you, and everyone in between have every damn right to legally own a firearm of pretty much any designation and classification- Yes, I understand that I can't legally own a M79 Grenade Launcher, fully automatic Tommy Gun or the like without all kinds of red tape being manuevered- and thats fine.

But the kneejerk "Oh! Guns are bad!" crap makes me see red. All the mag size and collapsible stock, sawed off barrels and supressor arguments have either limited validity that has been mangled by reactionary politics- or zero validity in regards to the amendment in question. Period. Whenver the tired old "oh, but criminals..." hot air comes out, I roll up my sleeves and get to debating...

Nothing wrong with being liberal, as long as you're actually liberal, instead of statist, (but with different priorities than the red flavor of statism.)

But the funniest part about the "collective right" hypothesis (snicker) is the duties of Congress with respect to the militia:

"To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;"

Did it ever occur to them that they were making the case for the Congress to buy militia members an assault weapon and ammunition, and train those members in modern military and police tactics?
