This is what I got at the gun show. That upper! A couple other things.
Well, more like this when you add things to it.
The thing that really pushed me over on selecting this upper was that front sight. Note that I can remove that front sight and gas block. It's got allan wrenches instead of pins. It had all the other things I wanted except the ambi charging handle and they were able to swap that out right there.
While the railed fore end is very nice, and well assembled I do want to swap it out for something like this. Lighter.
But for now I went from a box of mostly loose parts to a rifle in a weekend. Need ammo and a sling. And mount a light.
So, I got an AR. I feel kinda dirty.

Well, you HAD to come over to the dark side sooner or later... :-) Looks like a nice set up though!
I know how you feel. But if the money ever starts to flow again, I'll need to get me an AR also.
Damn Logistics.
Congrats... Now to go out and shoot it...
I need to get my lefty AR to the range again soon...
If you want to shave weight for a HD gun, dump the EOTech for a mini-Aimpoint or the like.
Also -- if you are worrying about weight, you don't need a bayonet lug.
No, he NEEDS the lug. We need every single feature they banned on every gun we can manage it on. Just because it might cause them physical pain.
Besides, the more guns what have the evil features, the better our "common use"position.
That's a bayonet lug?
And now that my Steyr-clone is repaired, I need range time too. After I get back from my current business travels even more so. Recoil therapy time.
Congrats on the new toy, looks sweet!
Nice!
If you're dumping sling swivels to save weight, then no, you don't need the bayonet lug. The lug probably weighs MORE than the sling swivel, and on that FSB it is designed to be removeable.
Its position relative to the CG of the rifle is WAY more pronounced than a butt mounted sling swivel on an already slightly nose heavy rifle.
I have the exact same FSB, and I have the bayonet lug mounted -- with the OKC3 bayonet to match on the "Sh1t & Git" spare ammo/IFAK bag. But I don't care that my rifle weighs 11 pounds loaded -- I ain't humping it on a two week LRS-D patrol (and if I was, I know exactly what I'd dump).
For me, it isn't too heavy to carry for home defense, it isn't too heavy to carry to the range, and it's not too heavy to carry if I was still a grunt -- especially given that I've humped an M203 and an M60 across hill and dale at various times. (You want maximum suckage, short of being the baseplate bitch on an 81mm team? Hump a WWII PIAT through wooded hills -- it's like dragging a boat anchor behind you, while also having a net bag full of claw hammers slung over your shoulder. {chuckle})
Plus, even the minimal recoil and muzzle jump of an AR are even more minimal when it's a fat, Twinkie eating, coach potato (I'm sorry, it was cruel to call my rifle "fat"; it's "big & beautiful" {grin}) -- and I get that WITHOUT going to a muzzle brake that is guaranteed to scortch the wall paint and make my eardrums meet in the middle if I have to light one off indoors to repel boarders.
Now, if it was a competitive 3-gun rifle, I'd carve into that rifle like a Hollywood plastic surgeon into a new movie star mom (actually, I'd build a new one from ground up). Extended length CF FF tube with minimal railings, 14.5" barrel with permanent muzzle device to get 16" lightweight all the way, low-pro .625 gas block with no Stabby Latch, Magpul CTR, STR, ACS, or ACS-L based SOLELY on which balances the gun better, an AFG2, Vickers sling, and an lightweight Aimpoint main optic. Might go polymer lower. But I'd run that gun with a brake, not a flash suppressor. Should be able to get under 7 pounds (unloaded), easy. It would also make a decent housegun, if you have a plan for the excessive flash and blast.
Personally, I likes me some bayonet lugs -- my Mossy 500 has a bayonet lug, and I have a nice matte silver & black BFK bayonet for it, just to make Chucky Schumer pee his pants. {grin}
However, when shaving weight like an extreme hiker prepping for a trek, you realistically don't need a Stabby Latch outside Fallujah or similar environments.
I, for one, am fascinated that the first AR he bought is not the AR he wants.
Just like the rest of us!
No Angus, this is the AR I want. Just tweaking the rail a bit... No way I'm getting rid of that fore rail. It's actually QUITE nice. And I may want to go back to that config.
