Something occurs...
Nobody will ever make a Rifle with wood furniture for a .mil issue weapon ever again. And that, in a way, is a shame.
I like walnut so. Not to hard, not too soft, not too heavy, not too light, and a handsome brown color.
This has also been true for the US since before I was born. It's kinda a shame.
Slow start...

Spent the morning blogging about cool old rocket-ship-looking Thunderbirds.
More later.

Wood furniture just doesn't lend itself to easy clean up after it has been slimed by NBC contaminants. Then there is the whole issue of sourcing enough quality wood appropriate to the application.
yet another reason i cherish my prewar Mauser. the stock is rather nice. feels nice, too.
I'm a traditionalist. Except for my "evil black rifles", I think a rifle should be a deep blue color and set into a good walnut stock. There's just something about that combination.
Personallly, I'll take inexpensive, dimensionally stable and rot resistant any day of the week.
Heh, since I just watched The Andromeda Strain last night I should add an asterisk to 'rot resistant' - until a new form of rot evolves. :P
Walnut IS rot resistant.
"inexpensive, dimensionally stable and rot resistant"
It's one of those "pick any two" sorts of deals.
I'm a big fan of lugging less weight around. Synthetic stocks are awesome at that. Sure, I appreciate the aesthetics of the classic guns, but for practical use, only a single one of my guns still has wood on it.
I've been trying to come up with something insightful since you posted this.
I'm still stuck on "This makes me sad."
