When a cowboy movie was a big hit, there were runs on Colt SAA guns. When Dirty Harry came out, everyone had to have a .44 Magnum. Lethal Weapon in the 80s, Berettas became popular.
Fad Guns.
What movie, since the 80s, has inspired a run on the gun stores for a specific model?
Nothing from the Matrix.
Nothing from the Expendables.
Maybe a mare's leg because Firefly. But not THAT big a run on them. It wasn't a blockbuster show but a fan segment show. Not enough audience to make a run on the gunstores like a ban proposal from the president could do. Eastwood emptied out the stores of .44 magnums.
What comes close today?

I am still waiting for the gun store to stock phased plasma rifles in the 40-watt range.

I wonder if some of this change is due to the guns in the Matrix, etc, being generally expensive and/or unavailable subguns and full autos. To be honest, I'm having a hard time even thinking of movies and tv shows these days that HAVE iconic guns. Most of the guns that get shown on tv these days are pretty vanilla service guns, so Glocks, Sigs, and the like. Good guns, but tv is not going to cause a sudden uptick in their sales. It could be that the next closest thing is the video game influence on the sales of the more tactical style guns. FN Five-SeveNs, AR/M4geries, I'm sure there are others. I don't game, myself, but it certainly seems like that segment of the firearms market has been growing due to some influence from there.
When TNT did their Roughriders film, prices on Krags spiked.
Same for Garands when Saving Private Ryan was followed up with Band of Brothers.
I remember someone saying the person who made the Sharps for Quigley Down Under went from a few orders a year to a years waiting list.
Well, back before I knew much about guns (shot .22lr bolt-actions on the town youth team but that was it), I fell completely in love with the FN P90 thanks to Stargate SG-1. I also really liked the Steyr AUG both for Die Hard (so what if it's from the '80s?) and since it was the model for the Peacekeeper rifle on Farscape. But, here's the thing: I don't own either. I'm not sold on the 5.7 round and that PDW/rifle is rather expensive with expensive ammo to boot. I don't own an AUG because I don't much like the 5.56... but I did buy a competition AR-15 back in the day. I chose the AR over the AUG because: cheaper, easier to customize/find parts, and familiarity from time in the Army.
I agree, so many service pistols just don't have the look nor focus anymore. The last thing that caught my attention was Agent Rossi's 1911 on Criminal Minds, and even then only because it stood out from the Glockfest.
Enemy At The Gates sure didn't hurt Mosin sales.
+1 on Angus and Tam. It's NOT about the 'new' guns per se...
I wanted a mares leg because of Wanted Dead Or Alive. And I wanted James Caan's sawed off double barrel from El Dorado.
In my defense, when I bought my Cx4 Storm carbine, I didn't know that they were featured in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series....
