It's based on belief systems. In America, everyone is all about "Science" and so we see UFOs. In Britain, it's ghosts. In latin countries it's Our Lady.
It is as above,
First, the interpretation, then the fact that anyone listens and documents the claimed sighting.....
Well, then, explain the preponderance in Australia, Britian, the bilingual Low Countries, India, South Africa, New Zealand Hong Kong, and former US colonies with lots of English speakers, still, like the Philippines and Japan.
Hmm. My guess is a map of Bigfoot sightings and hauntings would correlate pretty well with that data.
