The local aviation museum has 2 in flying condition. As well as its progeny of sorts, a Skyraider.

The p-47 Thunderbolt was an awesome piece of kit! Like a '57 Chevy Bel Air it was big heavy-metal like none other.

Mike, the Skyraider was more a progeny of the SBD Dauntless.

The AAF wanted to go after the Luftwaffe as much as 6 months prior to the operation described in the video. But Eisenhower wouldn't let them, insisting that they keep hitting factories.

But the key to all of it was "oil". We may say "duh" now, but the Allies just didn't understand how vulnerable the German oil supply was. Albert Speer thought the end had come when Ploesti was bombed. He was rather dumbfounded that the Allies didn't keep bombing there as he was convinced it would have ended the war as much as 6 months faster.
