I think it's Commander-length. In the shows I've seen (recently on a retro-tv channel) he and Scotty just carry 1911s.
Culp carried a P38, Cos a 1911. He even cocked it 2x by cycling the slide one-handed! (I own the DVD set of the series)
He preaches personal responsibility, then takes this tack.
