Politicians.
You will lose none of your supporting voters if you try and fail to enact gun control. I think past history is plenty demonstrative of that.
There is also ample examples of losing supporters and gaining more motivated opposition when you succeed in enacting gun control laws. You pay a price.

I got another punch on my Getting Older Card today. I feel pretty much the
same as I did yesterday, though.
I presume it beats the alternative.
