M3

It was only with this video of the M3 did I finally see the lines of the M4 Sherman.  I am kicking myself for not noticing sooner.








See?  That commonality would make the logistical tail easier.  Even if you argue it is not the optimal design.

You can see the development of the carriage in the M2 Medium tank, and rear aircraft engine. The M3 continues and builds upon it, bringing the distinctive round bow to the medium series. And evolving into the M4 bringing more castings and more weldings, getting rid of the dangerous riveted hull.

M2 Medium - lots of MGs and a turret and 37mm gun that looks like it belongs on a light tank.

M3 Medium - sponson mounted 75mm with a light tank turret with an MG turret.

M4 Medium - the Sherman in all it's glory.
